On October 17, 2022, students of Spanish at Jericho Middle School attended a Hispanic Heritage Month Assembly. This year’s theme was Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation, which aligns with the work we are doing at JMS in our NEST groups and through our work with OLWEUS.  In terms of cultural learning, JMS students put together presentations about local places to try authentic Spanish and Latin American cuisine, Hispanic/Latino inventors, and places around our country whose names have an origin in the Spanish language. The program also featured bilingual poetry reading, a flamenco dance, songs, and a soccer chant. The auditorium stage was decorated with flags of Spanish-speaking countries, and student-made puppets featuring icons of Latino culture created by our 6th graders who are learning Spanish.  We thank the JMS Spanish teachers, Ms. Waters, Ms. Jensen, Ms. Silva, and Ms. Vidal, for coordinating and organizing this year’s program.
